Welcome to the program where vocal technique meets music interpretation and the study of the classic repertoire from the American Songbook!

Hello dear singers!

I am thrilled to invite you to this new program at Creative Voice, where you’ll dive deep into your voice and artistry while exploring the treasure chest of songs from the American Songbook!

“The American Songbook” refers to the most important and influential American popular songs, jazz standards and show tunes from early to mid 20th century. They are songs that have stood the test of times, and continue to sung by and reimagined by many artists of our times. Think of classic standards like “Cheek To Cheek”, “Summertime”, “Over The Rainbow”, “Someone to Watch Over Me” or “My Funny Valentine”.

These songs have traveled with me since I began studying the voice and taking jazz singing lessons as a young emerging singer, and I never grow tired of singing and exploring them. This program is born out of my own love for the songs in the Songbook, and a desire to combine all areas of my professional expertise and experience: from teaching vocal technique and music interpretation, to working with improvisation, guiding singers to grow as musicians and artists and finding their own voice and style.

This program is a unique combination of repertoire study, voice work, musicianship, and finding your own artistic voice through exploring the creative possibilities in finding your own style in interpreting these classic songs through the study of phrasing, swing feel and rhythmic variations, text delivery, vocal stylings and (beginning) vocal improvisation.

Monthly practice focus

In the program, we’ll dive into monthly repertoire selections featuring songs by the songwriters of the month. During the year, we’ll explore songs by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim, and many more! You’ll be able to choose your favourite songs from the repertoire selections to study and sing each month.

You’ll also have a monthly practice focus when it comes to vocal technique & sound, rhythm, swing feel and timing, melodic variations and improvisation, and other elements for styling the songs, finding your own voice and expression. The deeper we go into the program, you’ll also get ideas on how to make your own arrangements of classic songs.

You’ll learn tons of vocal technique by breaking down the signature sound of famous singers who have interpreted the classics of the American Songbook, such as: Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, and many more!

Each month, you’ll receive:

The repertoire list and playlists for the songwriters of the month.
A selection of new prerecorded practice assignments for vocal technique/sound, music interpretation and vocal artistry. The assignments are designed to be doable even by people with busy schedules and you can decide how deep you’ll go.

1:1 lessons

As a member of the program, you’ll receive a monthly individual vocal lesson (60 min/session). Your 1:1 lessons are booked upfront so that you have your lessons scheduled in for one course semester at a time. Additionally, you’ll get personal practice video feedback and support from Katja through our private class platform.

Group classes

Dive deeper into the monthly practice materials on vocal technique and artistry and get extra motivation in biweekly group classes. This is also your opportunity to build good practice routines, check in on your individual practice and receive extra support. About once every 2-3 months, we’ll have a song share session where you can perform live for a supportive group of singers and receive feedback.

The group classes are scheduled on weekday mornings 10 am CET and Monday/Tuesday/Thursday evenings 6:30 pm CET, keeping in mind the timezones of our participants, to give you a chance to attend as often as possible. Don’t worry if you can’t attend every time: you will not run behind in this program if you cannot attend every group class, and replays are available to you in the course portal.

Vocal exercise library

Get access to the library with vocal exercises, featuring audio and video exercises, class recordings, vocal technique cheat sheets, practice routines and meditations for vocal performers.

Practice resources

In the program, we’ll be using the iReal Pro app which is a fantastic practice tool that comes with a virtual band, lead sheets of the songs, the possibility to transpose backing tracks to your keys, change tempo and style. You can purchase the app through Apple App Store or Google Play.

Katja Maria Slotte

Voice coach, creativity coach, artist mentor, Complete Vocal Technique teacher, singer, musician and vocal improviser with over 25 years of experience in professional vocal training and performance. Alongside having an eclectic artistic career, Katja is an experienced teacher, coach and artist mentor has worked internationally with singers, actors and singing teachers, guided artists from having a creative vision to a finished end product, coached artists in stage productions, and taught voice and music interpretation at a music university.

Regular price: €1160 or 4 monthly instalments of €300.
